ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a Santa Fe artist and I paint New Mexico churches, landscapes and flowers in vibrant watercolor.
Painting for me is all about discovery, where I explore both my inner and outer landscape. My primary medium is watercolor; I like it’s transparency and portability. The texture and absorbency of fine 300# paper is my choice, and my brush is the extension of my hand and my heart.
Plein-air painting of landscapes provides me with the opportunity to travel. It has unique challenges: weather, the public and transporting easels etc. to remote painting locations. And painting solo is at times risky. However what better way to indulge my love of being outdoors and painting.
Because of my personal background in Catholicism and the historical importance of churches in New Mexico, I have traveled extensively throughout the rural villages of northern New Mexico painting churches. I incorporate personal and religious symbols into my paintings and I enjoy painting them in a colorful whimsical style because it is more fun to paint them in that manner than in their current state of disrepair. Perhaps my portrayal will focus attention and inspire restoration of the historic sacred sites. Once upon a time these old adobe churches were a vital part of these communities
I typically paint in series so that I can really get to know my subject. I don’t know what I will paint next. However, I am listening.
